The client was looking for a solutions for the I-66 Inside the Capital Beltway during peak rush hours to keep traffic lower for High Occupancy Vehicles. This project opened a portion of the roadway to any driver that was willing to pay the toll to drive on these lanes during peak commuting times as well as allowing HOV vehicles to continue use as normal. Additionally we found a way to effectively communicate to motorists when tolling was taking place and how much to expect prices to be in real-time. ​ Traffic Systems & Technology facilitated the design of the Blankout Signs to notify to motorists when tolling was or wasn't taking place. Additionally we designed ITS controller cabinets along with power requirements, and battery backup calculations. We also helped to integrate all devices. Throughout the project, we brought as much material into our warehouse as possible in order to test and find the best designs for installations. We worked with the contractor, engineers of record (EOR), VDOT, and end user to make sure that we were providing what the project was expecting. Some specs were not feasible and we were able to come to a working solution regardless.
